The Death Eaters are the troops that followed the Dark Lord Voldemort in the First Wizarding War. According to Severus Snape, the members of this army were numbered in the thousands, and included wizards and witches who believed in the supremacy of Blood, brutal inbreeding, wizards of pureblood heritage, wizards to whom the Imperius curse has been imposed to, and of creatures like werewolves who decided to follow Voldemort for unknown reasons.

History[]

The first members joined Lord Voldemort in his school days, when he still used the name of Tom Marvolo Riddle. They were mainly his Slytherin companions; it is not known if members of other houses followed him, who began to esteem him after he accidentally lobotomized himself with his Natural Occlumency after accidentally killing his friend Myrtle Warren and becoming a psychopath who proclaimed the supremacy of the Pureblood. Soon after, foreign magicians, convicted criminals, other pureblood magicians, half-bloods who denied their Muggle heritage and children of the original Death Eaters joined him.

Origins[]

The original name of this group was the Knights of Walpurgis, referring to the feast of Walpurgis Night, where Muggles would pray for protection against witchcraft. The name "Death Eaters" was adopted after it was used as a derogatory name for the Knights in a Daily Prophet article[1] written by Lily Potter.

Members[]

The members of the Death Eaters were several thousand, but there are several names that can be highlighted. Lord Voldemort made sure to have within his ranks an "inner circle" in which there were wizards and witches with some exceptional talents which Voldemort believed could be of help. The Death Eaters usually gave themselves a code name to disguise their identity, a name which reflected some features of their personality, their magical abilities or even their family. Some notable Death Eaters are and/or were:
